Google Buys Motorola for $12.5 Billion, Moves Into Hardware

Wednesday, 17 August 2011 adeel

Google announced it will buy Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion, in a move that will give the Internet giant a presence in smartphone hardware and bring it thousands of new patents.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based company expects to complete the deal by late 2011 or early 2012 though the purchase may be subject to government approval. Motorola, one of the leading manufacturers of Android devices, will officially become an Google-only phone maker.

Google intends to run Motorola as a separate company that will continue to develop Android devices. Android will remain an open platform, allowing other companies to develop devices that run the platform.

But despite Android keeping its status as an open platform, Google’s new purchase makes the company a bit more like Apple.

Until now, Google has been content to let other companies develop mobile phone hardware, while the search giant focuses solely on developing software. Rival Apple, however, crafts both its own software and hardware, ensuring more control over its devices.

This strategy has allowed Apple to profit doubly on the devices it sells and stay competitive with Google, despite not having nearly as many handsets on the market. Google looks to be setting itself up to benefit from the same type of situation by buying Motorola.

But Google’s purchase may give the company more than the ability to develop hardware for its software. Motorola also comes with thousands of patents, which are increasingly valuable as companies sue their competitors seeking a court-ordered ban on products or the implementation of licensing fees.

Motorola’s patents makes a nice consolation prize for Google, which recently lost a bid for the Nortel patent portfolio to a group of competitors led by Microsoft and Apple.

Google’s Motorola purchase is a major change for a company that until now put its focus entirely on smartphone software rather than hardware. If the deal is finalized, it will likely shake up the landscape of the smartphone world, but the exact ramifications of Google’s acquisition of a major phone maker will take time to play out.

ThreatFire Protects Your PC From Zero-Day Attack / Exploit

Monday, 15 August 2011 adeel

Viruses, Trojans, Worms, Spyware and other malicious agents are continuously increasing in number, hence making malware attacks more frequent than ever before. We normally use Antivirus programs to protect our computers, but the problem is that an Antivirus only detects known threats which it can identify after going through a virus definition update. This leaves a significant amount of time for malware to invade your PC (before your Antivirus is updated). ThreatFire is an anti-malware application which, in contrast to traditional Antivirus programs, acts differently. It continuously protects your PC against zero-day attacks by detecting malicious instances instead of relying merely on definition updates. For example, it looks for applications which may be trying to capture your keystrokes or logging the steps you’re taking. ThreatFire is not necessarily meant to replace your Antivirus suite; it can work seamlessly in conjunction with your existing Antivirus application. The most distinctive feature of ThreatFire is its ability to detect zero-day exploits. Zero-day attacks are amongst most lethal ways of exploiting root access of system, as they are programmed to slip through security cracks of installed applications.
The developer’s website has also provided a chart (on their website) which displays enhanced performance of widely used Antivirus programs with the help of Threat Fire (including AVG, Avast, Kaspersky, Trend Micro, McAfee, GData and Avira). On startup, it displays a map of the threat trend around the world with the names of some of the most notorious malware. You can click on a malware’s name to get more information about it on ThreatFire website. The News tab can also be checked for getting the latest news regarding malware threats.

You can perform a quick or full scan of your computer from the Start Scan tab.

As mentioned earlier, the difference of threat detection between a common Antivirus and ThreatFire differs in terms of its ability to identify malware by behavior. Therefore, it is worth running a scan periodically using ThreatFire, even if your Antivirus scan has been performed earlier. The Threat Control tab displays any items which have been quarantined and allows performing an action to remove or restore them
You can also set your personal settings for tracking the behavior of potential threats by selecting Custom Rule Settings option from the Advanced Tools tab. Just click New button to launch a wizard where you will be able to specify process rules, triggers, etc for blocking applications according to specified behavior
The Settings tab allows setting the sensitivity level for periodic alerts, turning the protection shield, updates and community protection participation (for helping ThreatFire to identify threats) On or Off.
Settings
ThreatFire can be a viable option for boosting the security of your PC and adding an extra layer of protection. However, it’s worth mentioning here that it does advertise other related anti-malware products on the main interface and during installation. ThreatFire works on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Microsoft envisions the "home of the future"

Sunday, 14 August 2011 adeel

What if every wall in your home was a digital display? What if your kitchen table would set itself and also be a touchscreen-enabled entertainment device. What if your kitchen counters were “smart” enough to know what items were on it and had the ability to react accordingly, keeping coffee cups warm and iced-tea cold?

These are some of the questions that Microsoft asked when designing what they consider to be the “home of the future.” If it seems very much like Star Trek, only better in many ways, many would agree. The difference is that all of this is possible in the early 21st century, well ahead of Gene Roddenberry’s vision in the 1960s.

SONY ERICSSON XPERIA ACTIVE PREVIEW: FIRST LOOK

Sunday, 7 August 2011 adeel

Sony Ericsson Xperia Active is a different kind of smartphone. It is one of a handfull water resistant and dust proof smartphones. It is not often we hear about water resistant touch screen models. As with all the latest Sony Ericsson Android models, Xperia Active is having the latest version of Android operating system installed (Android Gingerbread 2.3)

Observant readers will notice that both the Xperia Ray and the Xperia Active has touch keys instead of hardware keys. We prefer the physical feedback given by pushable keys, but without them, the front side of the phone get a more sleek and stylish form. Sony Ericssonhas kept the dedicated camera key as well as volume controls and the power key. A very visual hinge makes it easy to attach the included wrist strap to the phone. The built in GPS, barometer and compass in addition to ANT+ support are good news for those wanting to replace their Garmin or Polar fittness product. ANT+ makes it easy to log heartbeats and bike cadence using third party accessories. The pre-installed iMapMyFitness app could be one of the apps usefull for this, but there are other free apps in Android Market such as Endomondo Sports Tracker used by million others which could do the same thing.

The Xperia Active also has the four corner home screen shortcuts which often are found onSony Ericsson phone models with small screens. These extra navigation icons are convenient for one hand navigation.

HOW TO ADD & REMOVE BUTTONS FROM WINDOWS EXPLORER TOOLBAR [WINDOWS 7]

Tuesday, 2 August 2011 adeel

If you don’t like following tedious steps to add customized buttons to Windows 7 Explorer toolbar which first include tweaking with Windows registry and then rebooting the system,CutomExplorerToolbar can significantly save you the time and effort involved in adding and removing buttons from Windows Explorer toolbar. This Nirsoft’s utility is designed to easily customize Windows Explorer toolbar; you just have to select ready-made utility buttons to add them to Windows 7 Explorer toolbar without having to reboot your system or to tinker around with Windows Explorer related registry keys.

The application enables you to add and remove toolbar button in real time, which means, after adding or disabling toolbar buttons, just refresh the Windows Explorer window in order to use them. To begin, launch the application with administrative privileges, select the action followed by Toolbar mode. The Actions drop-down menu holds options to either add or remove the toolbar buttons. The Toolbar mode deals with two behaviors – show toolbar button when one or more items are selected or when items are not selected in Windows 7 Explorer.
Now, from the Buttons List, pick those buttons which you want to add and then select the Folder Types. Once done, click Do It! to add selected buttons to Windows 7 Explorer toolbar

Similarly, you can change the actions from Add to Remove toolbar buttons. Just select show behavior (Toolbar Mode) and then enable those pre-defined buttons which are to be removed from Windows 7 Explorer toolbar. CutomExplorerToolbar works on Windows 7 and supports both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
